Trail Point 15 - LINCOLN SQUARE

Lincoln Square is an island at the intersection of

Lincoln, Lawrence and Western. On this island is the statue entitled "Chicago Lincoln". At the base of the statue is one of Lincoln's many quotes. It reads as follows:

"Free society is not and shall not be a failure."

The statue was sculptured by Dr. Avard Fairbanks after the pattern of the model by Lloyd Ostendorf who built the model for a contest to detennine the best idea for the statue.

The statue was unveiled on Saturday, October 20,1956, by Governor William G. Stratton and was financed by the State of Illinois.

What we have here

The Chicago Lincoln Avenue Trail began life back in 1973. It was established by the work of Boy Scout Troop 881 and Scoutmaster William G. La Fleur. This was the first trail of it's type and the first trail that offered a Braille patch that could actually be read.

The trail was established before the internet, and even before the creation of the 911 emergency system.

I have created this blog to give the trail an internet presence. I will post here all the original sites along the trail and the original written guide.

We are working to update the trail and bring the guide into the twenty first century. As the trail is updated I will update this blog until it provides an audio guide for a modern trail serving the communities and citizens of Chicago and anyone who desires to hike and learn.
