Trail Point 12 - ST. ALPHONSUS CHURCH - SCHOOL

The lower church was built in 1890 and the upper

in 1895.

Dedication was in 1897. The present school was built in 1903. The library was built in 1911. In 1939 there was a fire and the library was restored. In 1926 the present rectory was built and in 19~8 the Sisters house was built. In 1950 there was a fire in the church and the church was restored. 1957 was the Church's 75th jubilee.

What we have here

The Chicago Lincoln Avenue Trail began life back in 1973. It was established by the work of Boy Scout Troop 881 and Scoutmaster William G. La Fleur. This was the first trail of it's type and the first trail that offered a Braille patch that could actually be read.

The trail was established before the internet, and even before the creation of the 911 emergency system.

I have created this blog to give the trail an internet presence. I will post here all the original sites along the trail and the original written guide.

We are working to update the trail and bring the guide into the twenty first century. As the trail is updated I will update this blog until it provides an audio guide for a modern trail serving the communities and citizens of Chicago and anyone who desires to hike and learn.
